Brittany’s written up return brief after our discussions:
Vision
For this assignment, we have been given the space inside Block 10 – ‘The Great Hall’, and have been asked to recreate this space into a multi-purpose functional space for use by Massey students or a space that forms the ‘gate’ to the Massey Wellington Campus. Our vision is to create a functional design exhibition space that gives Massey University students a chance to showcase their work to the rest on the University as well as the general public as well as a relaxed area for students to gather and enjoy a coffee and a break between classes.
Programme
- An Exhibition Space
- A Cafe Space
- A ‘Catch up’ Space – With seating
Design intent
This space will benefit Massey University as it is a chance for students to showcase their work to a wider audience – the general public, giving students their own gallery space. This will also benefit other current students, they will have the chance to view and use other students works as precedents for their own. Since Block 10 is a CoCA space, we will centre our designs around the display space primarily for art and design students. In order to make this space multi-purpose, we also want to provide a space to sit and enjoy coffee and a catch up with friends in between classes. In the current Block 10 space, there is limited seating and it is located right in the middle of one of the main thoroughfares of the building. One thing we also noticed is the current seating feels quite segregated between spacial, textiles and the fashion communities. We would like to create a relaxed seating environment that allows students from Block 10 and 11 to sit and enjoy company in their own workspace. We would also like to consider how this work is displayed, in order for easy access to change displays as well as considering new, dynamic ways to display artworks and designs from the CoCA students. Our design will address spatial views in terms of the height of the building. There is so much ’empty space’ within the Great hall and ideally we would like to consider how this could be used to benefit our design concepts.
